The Tiger, Clemson University's student newspaper, recently asked students whether peer pressure is common among Clemson students.
One sophomore said, “For sure. I definitely think it’s who you surround yourself with in the environment you’re in.”
The students have figured out the adage that we are known by the company we keep. Our actions tend to mirror the behavior of the people we surround ourselves with. It’s very easy to adopt the attitudes and actions of the people we hang out with, the environment we're in, the entertainment we consume, and the idols we emulate. That’s why some of us remember our parents being so concerned about our choice of friends – and why we’re so concerned about our kids and grandkids and the groups they hang out with. It’s tried-and-true behavioral science: we become like the people we tend to be around.
Typically, our choice of people reflects our heart condition.
The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us become the best versions of ourselves or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves. We all need people in our lives who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best versions of ourselves.
These truths drive my passion for inspiring others to "own the ripple effect of YOU!" through my Happy Monday + Happy Friday writings. When we take personal accountability for the energy we bring into any space, we intentionally create ripple effects worth being around!
The best people to be around possess contagious positive energy! It’s the only type of energy that doesn't deplete but rather grows with use; we rarely feel exhausted in the presence of uplifting individuals.
You never know who needs you. Good energy is contagious. Be a delightful surprise!
Energy is contagious. Either you affect people, or you infect people.
Think about what you want people to catch from you — choose what you’re spreading!
Your energy introduces you before you even speak.
Be the energy you want to attract in life.
Let’s encourage ourselves to ask: Who and what will influence me? This question controls the door to the influences that shape our attitudes and mindsets, which in turn shape our lives.
Intentionally Own It! What growth does this message inspire me to embrace, and what makes it matter? When I embrace it, who am I becoming, and what value does this add to my life and to others?
