The moments we would never choose can still shape us into someone we’re grateful to become.
Years ago, during one of the hardest seasons of my life, I came across a word that stayed with me: Haphak.
It carries the idea of a turning point—a moment after which something has changed.
At the time, I understood why it caught my attention. Life had changed in ways I hadn't asked for. But looking back, I can see something I couldn't see then: I had changed, too.
Not all at once, and certainly not because I had mastered the circumstances around me. It happened in small choices.
Choosing to look for what was good when plenty wasn't.
Choosing gratitude when disappointment would have been easier.
Looking up long enough to notice the person in front of me.
Discovering that strength isn't always something we feel before we need it. Sometimes we find it by taking the next step.
None of those choices changed what was happening, but they were changing me.
I think that's easy to miss.
We tend to recognize turning points by what changes around us—but sometimes the most significant change is happening quietly within us.
We become a little more courageous, more grateful, more compassionate, a little clearer about what matters, and perhaps that's worth paying attention to.
In life, I’ve noticed that we don't always get to choose everything that comes our way, but we do have a say in who we’re becoming as we walk through it.
